[Les Miserables Fan Art] Jean Valjean by chong-yi [Les Miserables Fan Art] Jean Valjean by chong-yi
Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean in the movie Les Miserables.
it is certainly the most touching and impressive movie I've watched in year 2012.

Critiques and comments are highly appreciated! tell me what you think! =D

Overall I would say the piece is stunning. Your pencil work is very fluid and exact. Your tones and values seem to be right on. Proportions seem to be correct and the dark around his eyes are striking. The negative shading around the white hairs looks great. Something is lost in his clothing, maybe a lack of texture, seems a bit flat. The only real concern I have is the very defined skin pores on his forehead. Im not sure what the reference photo looks like so maybe it's spot on. Great work here keep it up! Hope this was helpful. Thanks

I absolutely love this! When I look at the reference picture, everything is replicated point from point with such accuracy and the texture is impeccable!

I think that it should have some more darker shades because even with all the amazing texture, it looks a bit flat to me. I've read before in the comments on one of your previous works that you don't use stronger dark shades because you said it's hard to work with them. I think that that's the next level for you, to take the risk of using darker shades :)

yeap I am still not used to those dark pencils.
the Old Dancer portrait is after this, that is darker! haha

well you are right, I focus too much on the texture, and I think I did it, but I failed badly in constructing the shape of his head. =(

I don't see anything bad with shape of his head :)

I've used dark pencils before, and man, they refuse to be erased >.>

I haven't seen the ref photo but this is a really nice piece, great facial hair, and your becoming a master of skin texture and transitions! but I would say that its unclear where the light source is coming from, as the shadows look very even and maybe on the right could have been a little darker. But unless I see the ref photo I can really be sure.

I totally love your detail. It's fantastic. However I don't know it's a fault of scan/photo, but in some places you should have pushed harder with the lead. Especially under his nose.
It looks amazing anyways so... :D Keep drawing.

great point. yup in many region i gave too much pressure. But that was not lead, just normal graphite pencil =)
the nose's outline was wrong, after erasing some marks are left. So I actually overlapped it violently lol
thanks
