Frozen Flower Field by chong-yi Frozen Flower Field by chong-yi
Full view please! critiques are super super super appreciated =D

Size: A2
Time: 12 Oct 2012 ~ 19 Jan 2013 (65 hours)
Media: Graphite Pencils 2H~ 8B (Staedler Lumographs, Faber Castell, Derwent)

inspired by the artist :iconddzim: and of course one of his art,

wooh I tought I could never finish this... it took me too long on the details than expected. So I left it beside and continued on other drawings. Few weeks ago I continued drawing it and yeah~ i finished it! ^___^
I enjoy drawing the details on her face, the freckles and facial hair. I purposely blurred her shoulder, ears and hair to create some effects so that people focus on her face.
scanning in 7 parts with an A4 scanner is killing me... luckily Adobe Photoshop is just too "clever" to join them together ^___^

This is what realism is all about my friend! The details and lighter and darker contours, with the freckles are amazing, did you do this in layers of applications then a little blending to get the tonal transitions in areas on the freckles on her face?

Yes I think I can't do it in one shot. In the hb layer, I already marked the highlights with erasers. Every layer after that, meaning the 2b untl 6b (for the face), the blending is needed so it doesn't look like pencil mark. But u will still able to see the highlight part... In this stage u have to redo the highlight before the next layer. These steps are repeated for a few times and this is the main contribution to the time cost. =)

Hey this is really awesome! I love it. But if you want some tips? My art teacher was just yelling at me for not going 'black' enough in one of my portraits I'm working on. I think you have a little bit of the same problem. Think about it. But totally awesome!

well good suggestion my friend.
anyway it is not easy to include so much of "black" into a pencil portrait.
all the graphite pencils are "grey", no matter how dark it is, it is still grey. the only black color we can get is steadler mars lumograph 8B or charcoal pencil. pastel or color pencil of course... and they are just hard to use. =)

You can always use a softer pencil? But I know what your saying its something Im working on myself as well and thought I might give you something to focus on yourself! :D Not trying to be super critical. Still learning myself here.

yeah that is a good point. same value of pencil can have different hardness in different brands. besides, paper used is a very important issue to create effects =)
thanks

hi there. thanks and ya the photo is just amazing! this is the 2nd photo i request from this photographer.
yes patience is so damn important. My suggestion is, draw a few piece in a same time, when you feel tired or bored with any one just continue drawing on another. =)
there is no point that you continue working on a drawing when you loss your patience, things only get worse. =D
